Removing bees in chimney flue

The first call of 2012 was in February, asking for me to remove a colony of bees from a woodburner flue which had taken up residence in July 2011.  Not quite sure what to expect I carefully removed the flue above the stove in order to give me access and then shook the remaining flue which lined the chimney.  The result was a dead colony of bees fell out followed by lumps of comb.  The bees had died from starvation.
